How To Get Rid Of Ants In The Bedroom

Ants are extremely annoying for renters and homeowners. Here are some ways to help you deal with them:

  1. Do a deep clean of your bedroom where ants are and be sure to clean out any food or water sources that are attracting them.
  2. Use an insecticide powder about your bed as a defense to help keep them away and reduce the number in the room.
  3. Ant baits are good and are effective, too. However, I definitely recommend both as a one-two attack covers a lot more of the ant population in less time than one alone.

However, the truth is that in order to get rid of an ant infestation you need to kill not only the ants you see but also the ants in the nest you can’t see. Short-term solutions really don’t work as the ants can come right back.

Steps to get rid of bedroom ants

1. Find their location

You’ll need to hunt down where they’re coming from. An ant infestation usually comes from the outside as they typically find their way in through cracks or gaps which you can then seal or block off.

There’s still usually a colony or antbed hidden somewhere which is where ant baits in liquid or granule power form work well.

2. Clean the bedroom and entire house or apartment

Vacuum, sanitize, sweep, and mop as needed to remove the incentive for ants to keep coming back. They’re attracted to food, water, and even other (dead) insects. Unless you remove the reason for them to stay they’ll just move to the next attractive area in your home.

Food crumbs and particles are especially problematic as they fall to the floor where they become great food for the insect invaders to find.

3. Use ant baits, sprays, and powders

Ant repellent in powder or spray form is great for helping to keep them out of your bedroom. Keep some ant spray/insect spray handy to knock out the ones that still get through. All in all, I recommend ant baits the most with sprays being secondary and very helpful but not critical.

Natural ant remedy steps

1. Clean up / preparation

  • The first step towards being free of ants in your bedroom is to remove any food crumbs. Vacuum up the floor and wash the bedding.
  • Adding a bit of borax to the wash will help kill ants on the bedding, should they return, and you can sprinkle borax over the floor as well.

2. Ant remedy recipes

  • A mixture of one part borax to three parts of sugar, dissolved in water can make a syrup that ants will take back to their nest. The borax is poisonous to ants and will kill them in the nest.
  • Essential oils like peppermint and cinnamon repel ants, as do cayenne and black pepper. Citrus also repels ants.
  • All of these scents confuse the chemical trails that ants leave to find their way around. Cinnamon has the additional advantage of being poisonous to ants.
  • You can mix either of these above with water in a spray bottle for easy application and coverage as well as applying them directly.

3. Apply where needed

  • Once you’ve made your natural ant remedy, spray (and/or apply the mixture) generously on their trails and where you think they’re coming in.
  • Apply the ant remedy in your bedroom at the base of the bed, entrances where they come in, and wherever you see them moving.

Where do ants come from in the bedroom?

where do ants come from in the bedroom

Ants usually search for food. If they find a reliable source of food, such as your kitchen or dining room, they may choose to set up a colony.

In searching for a home, the ants seek a warm, secure place, close to food and water. A bedroom closet kept warm and close to a bathroom, can be an ideal spot for an ant colony to set up housekeeping.

  • Look for any cracks in the baseboards or plaster that ants can use to come and go through the house. Also, look around the foundation for ant heaps.
  • Many times ants will use tree branches that hang over the house, the gutters, or rain spout, as a convenient bridge to cross over into your home.
  • Gaps in walls, window frames, and especially doors that go to the outside are all common places for the to come from. Just remember that even if a crack is tiny, that doesn’t mean they can’t use it. Ants will get in through cracks in walls, for example, more often than you might think.
  • Keeping overhanging limbs cleared away and looking in the basement or foundation can help keep ants at bay.

What are ants attracted to in your room?

  • Ants are probably attracted to any food in your room. If you eat in bed, any crumbs you leave will attract ants. If you remove the food source you can often solve or at least reduce the problem.
  • Ants also seek warmth and moisture. The bedroom is probably one of the warmest rooms in your house, and nothing can be done about that. The moisture of a nearby bathroom can attract ants as well. Be sure that there are no leaking pipes or pools of water that can attract ants.
  • Ants might find a dark closet and set up a nest. Check the floor and walls of the closet to make sure that there are no cracks or places where ants can set up a nest.
  • As a practical matter, ants will be much more interested in your kitchen and dining room than in your bedroom.

If you find large numbers of ants in your bedroom that probably means that the rest of your house has already been overrun with them.

Are ants more active at night?

are ants more active at night

The short answer is “it depends.” There are thousands of different species of ants – some are more active during the day and some are more active at night. Others are active during day or night.

Certain species of ants are nocturnal which means they’re more active at night. Carpenter ants are nocturnal for example.  Other species of ants are diurnal, meaning they’re active during the day. Fire ants are an example of this type.

Others are active both night and day; these are cathermal.  Some types of house ants are cathermal. Ants are sensitive to both light and temperature; changes in the temperature can change their routine.

In each case, the ants focus on their main activities, like hunting for food, during their preferred time, and conduct other tasks, like building or maintaining their nest, during their “off-hours.”

All ant species depend on external temperature to regulate their body heat. Tropical species of ants are more likely to be active at night when it’s cooler. Ants that live in cold or temperate climates tend to be active during the day when it’s warmer.

In a house, with both constant light and a consistent temperature, ants can be active at any time of the day or night so don’t be surprised.

Will ants bite you in your sleep?

Yes, ants may bit you in your sleep, but it’s usually because of how they react to being approached, disturbed, or sensing seveal of those. Many ant species bite as part of their defense mechanism.

Most ants in temperate climates do not bite at random but only bite if their nest is threatened. Other species, like fire ants, are quite aggressive and willing to bite anything they perceive as a threat.

It’s more likely that the ants are simply foraging for food or searching and that some other pest, like fleas or bed bugs, is actually the culprit for biting unless you’ve unintentionally triggered a defense & attack reaction from them.

Can ants live in a mattress?

can ants live in a mattress

Ants might live in a mattress, although it’s not that common. A bed in a bedroom is usually warm and humid and a mattress might be an attractive place for ants to live. In reality it’s more likely for them to come in on your clothing or crawl onto the bed looking for food.

To keep ants away from your bed, be sure not to eat in bed. Dropping food crumbs will attract ants.

Wash your bedding regularly to remove any crumbs or debris. Washing the bedding will also remove any scent trails that the ants have left. Adding a bit of borax to the laundry detergent or soap will help poison any ants that forage for food after that.

You probably won’t want to use chemical pesticides on your bedding or mattress. Instead, you can use certain aromas as some repel ants:

  • Both mint and citrus oils repel ants.
  • Cinnamon both repels and poisons ants.
  • Both cayenne and black pepper repel ants as well.

These are natural and non-toxic ways to discourage them from getting them into your bedding & mattress (or other places as well).

How long do ants live in a house?

how long do ants live in a house

If any are in your home and can’t get to food, water, or back to the colongy, most can live around 1-2 weeks or maybe a few weeks at the most.

While worker ants may live for only a few weeks in nature, an ant colony can live as long as the queen survives. In some ant species, a queen may survive for several years. In others queens have been recorded as living for several decades.

Fortunately, unlike bees, ants don’t generate a new queen when the old one dies and they don’t readily accept a new queen. Thus, if the queen ant can be killed, the ant nest will eventually die out naturally
